Keldeo lies and claims the title of his mentors (”Sacred Swordsman”/”Sword of Justice”) to formally challenge Kyurem
Kyurem accepts because Keldeo went through all the rites of a formal challenge
Kyurem is ridiculously powerful and Keldeo is in way over his head!!
It was a formal challenge, so his mentors can only stand from the sidelines and disapprove, but not intervene (when they finally lose it and want to put a stop it, Kyurem freezes them)
Keldeo keeps claiming the title anyway until Kyurem breaks his horn
Keldeo’s rather traumatized by his horn (”sword”) being split off his face and finally catches up with how horrifying the situation is and then, runs away…
Kyurem chases after him because the battle is not over yet.
It’s such a unique set-up to a Pokemon movie! And Keldeo really is the star of the film, Satoshi/Ash and friends each play a role (no one is left just being part of the background), but all of their roles assist Keldeo in reaching his objective, because the story really is his.
Folks that want the anime to match the video games word-for-word probably won’t like it, but it’s a very unique Pokemon movie where the focus is all on a young, reckless Legendary Pokemon who hasn’t quite earned the title yet and how he has to overcome his fears, using what his masters/mentors taught him, and right past wrongs.
